The expert restoration of a Southern
Railway enamel Station direction sign.
This
Station Direction Sign for Bideford Station would have been
located on the town side of the bridge, on a lamppost, directing
people to the station which was on the opposite side of the
river to the town.
At some point this sign was
taken down and was buried, probably in the 1950's, only to be
dug up by a JCB when working on a building project in 2002. The
sign was creased by the digger and covered in cement but was
rescued by someone who realised that ex railway items had a
market.

The double sided
sign after 50 years underground.
The first job was to clean off the
concrete and get the crease removed on a press.

It was decided to only restore one side of the sign.
It has now been cleaned and filled and is ready to paint.
A very difficult job with lettering and background to match up.

The completed item and a very worthwhile project to
save such a rare and desirable sign.
An excellent example of what can be achieved by a skilled restorer.
