These puzzles were made by Chad Valley for the GWR between 1924 and 1939. The first was
Caerphilly Castle made to be sold at the British Empire Exhibition in May 1924.
It was the only jigsaw sold in this series without GWR on its blue and white
box and was sold at 5/-.

This did not sell well and the price was later reduced to 2/6d and the box and jigsaw were
changed with the front and rear not cut to the outline of the loco and a GWR box used. These
were from now on sold at cost as publicity material. It eventually sold about 78,000
copies.
Another 45 puzzles were produced (2 with different versions of the same puzzle) and by 1939
when production ceased over 1,000,000 had been produced.
The jigsaws are listed in order of scarcity with this
based on jigsaws available in the past 3 years.
A picture is available of each puzzle - just click
