1.             Cast-iron Bridgeplate “G.C.R 427”.  From a bridge at Lutterworth,      Leicestershire. Repainted. Distinctive “target” shape.

2.         BR(E) “DARFIELD MAIN” Diagram of Signals and Table of Locking.  Onthe ex G.C. line from Aldam Jct. to Wath Central. Shows also Mitchells Main and Wombwell Central boxes. 13” x 44” Folded, good, clean condition.

3.       B.R. (S) Enamel Notice:  “Please show Tickets”. White on mid-green. Excellent colour and shine, V.G.C., apart from chip above top centre fixing hole, 16” x 10”.

4.       Signalbox Diagram. “Southern Railway Belmont”. An office copy with its mechanical locking tables under the diagram. Dated 8th June 1943. Folded. 32” x 18”

5.       L.N.E.R. Through Carriage Working Book. G.N. main line and Cambridge Branch 26th September 1938 u.f.n. 118 pp. Gives times, class of vehicle for each train.  Lots of information.

6.       Highland Railway Large Button.  Full Company Title in garter with Coat of Arms in middle.  Froggatt 20/12.

7.       (Nottingham Corporation Tramways) Cap Badge. Ornate, inter-twined script lettering. 1⅜” x ¾”

8.        G.W.R. Notice (No. 26).  Theatrical Special Plymouth to Swansea January 22nd 1905.  Gives times.  Also notes “2 Corridor Thirds to 9.45 a.m. ex Plymouth for “Sinbad the Sailor” Company, Devonport to Llwynypia to be attached to the train. One page.

9.        L.N.W.R. Breakfast, Luncheon, Tea and Dining Car Circuits. May 13th 1919. u.f.n.  Gives details of number of cars required for each circuit.  Also gives stock list of L.N.W. and West Coast Dining Cars with dimensions, number of seats, 4 pp. Interesting.

10.      L.N.W.R. cast-iron Bridgeplate “L.N.W.R. 35” with squarer ampersand. Face repainted.

11.      Enamel Sign “Southern Railway Smoking Strictly Prohibited”. Red lettering on white.  Generally G.C..  One or two minor edge chips only 16½ x 12”

12.      G.W.R. Publication “Dunkirk and the Great Western”. 40 pp.  Colourful cover.  Lots of information on G.W.R. steamships, including names of masters, etc.  Clean condition.

13.       B.R. (S) Royal Train Notice. Parkstone to Waterloo 26th November 1954. Gives times, special working instructions and unusually in this case, the loco number – 34060 (25 squadron) 4 pp.

14.       Cast-iron wagonplate “N.E.R. H.D. 0672 Timber Bogie”.  Attractive plate with scalloped corners from Hull Docks.  Repainted a long time ago.  8 ¾” x 5⅜”

15.       B.R. (E) Diagram of Signals and Table of Locking “New Southgate”.  Shows track between Wood Green No. 2 box and cemetery box.  Date stamped 6th January 1955 but late 1940’s style.  Folded.  McKenzie and Holland frame. 51” x 24”.

16.       The Forfar and Brechin Ry Act. 1890. Maroon cloth covers with title in gold block tooling. 31pp.

17.       Painted tin wagonplate.  “For Repairs advise the British Wagon Co. Ltd Rotherham”.  Dark blue on off-white; 8” x 5”.  Manufacturer’s name “J. A. Whitehead, Didsbury.”

18.       L.N.E.R. Diagram of signals and table of locking. “Barkston South” 9.9.36.  Also shows the diagram of McKenzie and Holland frame.  An E.C.M.L. box just north of Grantham, junction for line to Sleaford.  Folded 37” x 22”. G.C..

19.      London Brighton & South Coast Railway, Electrified Lines, General Rules and Instructions September 1913 (cancelling those issued December 1st 1909) 30 pp.  Card covers.  Rusty staples; not bad for its age.  Uncommon.

20.      Brass paycheck. “B.R. (E Reg) Ch’field Mid-Engrs., W’shops” stamped, oval.

21.      B.R. (W) Service Time Tables. Whitchurch, Brecon, Pwllheli and Aberystwyth.  A good clean copy with map on cover.   Includes branches to Kerry and Dinas Mawddwy.  80 pp. Lists signal boxes and opening hours. September 25th 1950.

22.      G.E.R coloured plan.  “Shadwell” G.E.R. Land Agent’s Office Revised November 1909.  Shows track, platforms, signal box, fog huts, signal posts, etc.  Also shows East London Rly from Wapping to Whitechapel.  Paper laid on green cloth boards marked “Shadwell” and “General Manager”.  Some staining on top of boards but diagram not affected.

23.      L.B.S.C.R. pay tin stamped with Company initials on side, with a hinged lid with large brass plate with the number 169.

24.      Ipswich Tramways Act 1881.  23 pp. Bound in dark red buckram covers with title in gold.

25.           Royal Train Notice L.N.E.R. (G.N. Section) Journey of H.M. Queen and Suite for Kings Cross to Harrogate 31st August 1928 – will travel by Pullman car train no. 364.  Gives passing times.  2 pp.  Rusty pin hole; otherwise good.

26      North Lindsey Light Railway full Company headed letter to Sir Sam Fay, concerning the development and equipment at Winteringham Haven.  The G.C.R. was already working the line and the N.L.L.R. hoped that the G.C.R. would pay for specialist equipment for coal handling at the dock.  Interesting:  2 sheets; both headed with Company title.

27.      “Southern Railway Barcombe Mills” Signalbox Diagram (office copy) with mechanical locking chart. S.R. stamp 8th June 1943.  Folded; 28” x 17½”.  Situated between Isfield and Culver Jct.

44.       G.W.R. Mechanics Institution, New Swindon Engineering Society Paper “Modern Railway Carriages by G. J. Churchward.” January 1898; 26pp + 19 pull-out diagrams.  Churchward was very much ahead of his time.  Good condition, apart from rusty staples.

45.       Manchester South Junction and Altrincham cast-iron bridge number. “M.S.J. &A.R. 62A”. Face repainted, back unrestored.

46.       B.R. (M Vertical Track Plan.  Egginton Jct – Colwick North Jct. (E.R.), Pinxton South – Awsworth Jct (E.R.), showing track and sidings of both lines and enlargement of Derby Friargate.  Amendments up to June 1961.

47.      B.R. (E) Signalling Notice. New Signalling between Ilford Station, Ilford Car Sheds and Goodmayes. 12pp and pull-out diagram 22nd July 1949 Good condition.

48.       Plan of Heanor Station area, showing track, buildings, etc. of the ex M.R. branch terminus of the line from Ilkeston in a file marked “Heanor” and “DBY 347-1.” Plan measures 16” x 10”

49.       L.M.S. cast-iron paperweight (M.R. &Co. pattern) stamped with Company initials twice.  Round and shaped like an old light switch.

50.          L.N.E.R. (G.N.Sect.) Signalling Circular. Opening of line between           Cuffley and Langley for Passenger Traffic and Closing of Hertford (G.N.)    Station for Passenger Traffic.  Includes diagrammatic sketches of signal     gantries 4 pp. 30th May 1924.

51.     4 circular brass G.W.R. signal lever numbers: 5, 7, 8, 9. Hand engraved chunky brass retaining original black wax infill and fixing bolts. Good condition.

52.      G.W.R. Bell Code Card.  Buildwas Much Wenlock – Marsh Farm Jct. (near Craven Arms). Includes the early closures of Presthope, Rushbury, Longville and Harton Road on Wenlock Edge.

53.      Track and Siding Diagram. “Borrobol” from the H.R. Far North line between Inverness and Thurso.  Ink on grey vellum, probably dates from L.M.S. days. 8” x 13”

54.      Southern Railway) cast-iron bridge number.  25”, similar pattern to the L.S.W.R. but smaller and much scarcer.  Rectangular: 11” x 9”. Repainted a long time ago.

55.       B.R. (W) booklet. Times during which signal boxes in the Cardiff Division are open. 6th May 1968 – 4th May 1969. 6 pp.

56.       N.E.R. Programme of Excursion and Special Trains, Working Arrangements, etc. March 28th – 31st 1908. Includes many inter-company specials, including Hull to Southampton (L.S.W.R.) conveying Russian Marines.

62.       B.R. (W) Gradient Diagram (B.11082 – B).  Cogload to Whiteball Tunnel. Paper; 29”x 9”.

63.      Cast-iron wagonplate. “The Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Builders Ltd., Smethwick England 1924”. Ornate design with the “Star” motif. Encrusted with thick old paint.

64.      G.W.R. Royal Train Notice. Timetable of Her Majesty’s Journey from Windsor to Folkestone Pier via Kensington (Addison Road), Factory Jct. (L.C.D.R.) and Ashford (S.E.R.) March 9th 1899. 4 pp. Has been folded at some time. Some foxing, though reasonable condition for its age.

65.      B.R. (E) Diagram of Signals and Table of Locking. “Claypole”.  Shows the track between Westboro and Balderton.  Undated but probably late 1950’s. Claypole is situated on the E.C.M.L. in North Nottinghamshire. Folds out to 80” x 13”

67.      B.R (S) Signalbox Diagram. “Mitcham Junction”. An office copy with its mechanical and electrical locking and detection tables; S & T stamp dated 26th June 1950. Folded; 45” x 29”

68.      G.W.R. Booklets: (i) Synopsis of course of instruction on safe working of railways and the appliances used in connection therewith for the use of the students of the signalling classes October 1945. 76 pp.  Many photos and diagrams (blue covers) (ii) G.W.R. Regulations for Train Signalling on double and single lines. August 1st 1936.

69.      B.R. Folding Card. “Facts about firing Locomotives. Helpful Hints.” B.R. in red totem at the top.  Quite interesting.  It states that higher grade coal was used before the War, and that the lower grade coal requires more skilful handling and then proceeds to give 20 practical hints.  B.R. fuel bill for coal - £36 millions – three times figure of 1938. c. 1950.

70.      L.N.W.R. Instructions in connection with the working of Electric Trains between Queens Park New Station and Willesden New Station 1915.  24 pp Rusty staples; covers slightly grubby; otherwise reasonable condition.

71.      (L.S.W.R.) cast-iron bridge numberplate “50”. Rectangular 15” x 9”; face repainted.

72.      B.R. (E) Layout of Signals and Table of Locking. “Aldam Junction” between Wath and New Oaks. 1950’s. Folded. 41” x 143”

73.      Plan “L.M. &S.R.” Lamport”. A fully coloured plan, showing station buildings, goods shed and new cattle pens, together with a siding to be removed.  Quite detailed; dated 29th November 1939. Folded and somewhat creased.

74.     (Cambrian Railways) cast-iron gate notice. “Shut the Gate. The Penalty is Forty Shillings for leaving this gate unlocked”; quite an attractive sign;  face restored; 16” x 12⅜”

75.           G.W.R. Notice No. 108.  Special Trains between Plymouth and Yelverton, April 27-28th 1905. Detachment of five officers and thirty prisoners to leave Princetown on 7.35 for Portland and on the next day to Gloucester and Warwick. Gives times and arrangements. One page.

76.    Book. “Locomotive Management from Driving to Cleaning” by J. T. Hodgson and J. Williams published by “The Railway Engineer” 1924. 421 pp + adverts. Many photos, diagrams. Good clean condition.

77.     G.E.R. Co.’s Allotments Rule Card to be observed and performed by the tenants of allotments forming part of the land belonging to G.E.R., with the tenant’s name on the back, (a fireman at Epping) for allotment No. 19 at Theydon Bois, 1917. Spike hole.

78.      (N.E.R.) oval cast-iron Bridgeplate “59A”. Repainted.

79.      G.W.R. Working Notice (No. 48). Fruit Traffic from Plymouth (with Brest Fruit), St. Germans, Saltash, Tavistock and Cheddar Valley to the North of England, South Wales and London, 1905 Season. 11 pp with some timetables and arrangements with other railways.

80.      B.R. (W) Booklet.  “Newport Multiple Aspect Signalling Scheme, Marshfield Area.” Introduction of preliminary Stage “A” of Stage 7, 31st January 1963. 2 pp + pull-out diagram.

81.      Shedcode 89B Brecon 1948 – November 1959, Croes Newydd – January 1961 to September 1963. Repainted a long time ago.

82.      Carriage Print. Newark Castle by Kenneth Steel.  A fine view looking across the Trent to the ruined castle and imposing spire of the church in the background.  In original type glazed frame and in excellent condition.

83.      Carriage Print.  “Sulgrave Manor, near Helmdon, Northants.” by John Bee from the L.N.E.R. series.  Looking across the lawn towards the famous Jacobean house.  In original type glazed frame and in excellent condition.

84.      Carriage Print. “Loch Morar, Invernesshire.” by W. Douglas MacLeod from the Scottish Region series.  Looking down from the loch with the mountains of Knoydart in the background. Unframed and in excellent condition.  This is the L.N.E.R. size.

85.      B.R. (E) Diagram of Signals Holloway North Down.  Shows the entire track between the Holloway South Boxes and Finsbury Park.  1950’s. Folded 79” x 13”

86.      (M.S.L.R) untitled “Beware of the Trains” cast-iron notice. Scalloped corners; 18½” x 11¾”; repainted.

87.      G.W.R. Publication: “A Great Western Railway Signal Box”. A Souvenir of the Exhibit at the British Empire Exhibition Wembley 1925.  Interesting photos of instruments, repeaters, interior of signal box and diagram of “Great Western Junction”. 30 pp + fold-out map of system.  Good condition for age with very light foxing on covers only.

88.       Large Scale Ordnance Survey Map of G.N.R. main line from Hitchin Station to Ippollitts. G.N.R. lands shaded green.  Shows track, signal posts, field boundaries.  Dated 1898 with G.N.R. Surveyors Dept. Stamp, Hitchin.  Seems to be almost a village; 24” x 28”.

89.       G.W.R. Plymouth Division. Notice of Extra Trains and Special Arrangements March 25th – 31st 1905.  Gives times of rail motors between Saltash and Defiance Halt; occupation of locking frames in Yealmpton branch etc., 14 pp.

90.       L.N.W.R. button whistle showing “Britannia”. Good.

91.      Carlisle Citadel Station Act. 1873. 50 pp. Dark red covers with gold tooling.

92.      B.R. (W) Signalling Notice No. WW371. Amalgamation of Signalboxes, Carmarthen; 3pp. typescript + two attached diagrams.

93.      Button. Colonel Stephens lines standard nickel button.  See Froggatt 95/5; 1” dia.

94.      L.M.S.R. Plan of Welford and Kilworth.  Full colour showing track and station buildings; on thin paper showing work to be carried out.  Several tears but without loss and would frame well. Interesting item from a line (Rugby – Market Harboro) where it is not easy to find items from.

95.      L.M.S. S & T Diagram No.’s 55-64, L.M.S. Three Aspect Colour Light Signal; gives dimensions, etc.; dated 30th January 1936.

96.      Hand Coloured Engraving. “Crumlin Viaduct on the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Extension to Taff Vale.” Engraved and published by Newman & Co.  Shows the famous viaduct in a rural and, as yet, unspoilt aspect.  Almost 150 years old.  Mounted and in modern frame.

97.       (North London Railway) cast-iron bridge number “245”. Rounded ends, repainted.

98.      B.R. (E) Signalling Notice No. 3468.  New Signalling between Broxbourne Jct., Roydon and Hertford East,  11th January 1960; 9 pp + pull-out diagram.

99.      Plan. G.N.R. Brinsley Junction Land near Timber Viaduct, Brinsley Branch.  Track coloured in.  Shows branch to Midland Railway and line from Pinxton. Stamped “G.N.R. Derby, District Engineer’s office.   ” 15”x 12”

102.    L.M.S. Loco Dept Water Supply printed notice concerning Hest Bank, Brock, Hednesford, Shrewsbury and Castlethorpe November 28th 1923.

103.    G.W.R. Synopsis of Course of Instruction on Safe Working of Railways and the appliances used in connection therewith for use of students of the signalling classes. October 1946.  Interesting diagrams and photos of instruments, repeaters, etc.; 76 pp. In used condition.

104.    B.R. (E) Signalbox Register for Linton (Cambridgeshire) on Cambridge – Haverhill branch.  This is the last register for the box which closed March 4th 1967 and covers period September 1966 – March 1967.

105.    Gold Coast Railway Locomotive Diagram book. Blue linen covers with C.o.A., with elephant and palm tree.  25 loose diagrams showing measurements and scrapping details for each clan.

109.     Plan Halifax High Level Railway St. Pauls. Shows the signal box, all track, platforms, turntable, buildings, platelayers’ hut, waiting room etc., n.d. St. Pauls closed to passengers in 1917.  21” x 15”

110.     L.M.S. & G.W. Joint Railways Sectional Appendix to W.T.T. for Chester and Birkenhead and Shrewsbury and Hereford sections 1st January 1933, 94 pp.  Lots of local information; good condition.

111.     L.N.E.R. silverplated sugar tongs by Walker and Hall.  “L.N.E.R.” in script; good condition; 5” long.

112.     G.W.R. “Guide for labelling of traffic in full truck loads … for traders   served by Bristol (G.W.R.) depots. Folding blue card opens out to 12” x 6”

113.     B.R. (W) Signal Box diagram “Largin” dated 15.12.49 (Office Copy). A box on the Cornwall main line between Bodmin Road and Doublebois, folded, 25” x 11”.

118.    Great Western Railway Magazine 1928 in full Company binding with  large gilt Coat of Arms on the front cover.  Dark green binding; good condition. Bound magazines with full C.o.A were supplied to senior officers of the Company.

Report on the problems and costs of converting into motor roads the Haughley-Laxfield and Wivenhoe – Brightlingsea branch railways.  A fascinating study, particularly on the Mid Suffolk Light.  Passenger and freight receipts are analysed as are the costs and benefits of converting the trackbed into an L.N.E.R. road charging a toll to other users.   Estimated that work would take 12 months, during which period traffic would have to be suspended. 36pp.  Very interesting.

147.    G.W.R. brass cabside numberplate 7788 built by Armstrong Whitworth (No. 1144 of December 1930).  New to Old Oak Common, it was at Reading in 1947 staying there until March 1962 when it was transferred to Stourbridge. Withdrawn July 1962 and cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge. Face repainted a long time ago. Back is ex loco.

150.    Smokebox numberplate 43771 ex M.R. 0-6-0 built 1903. In 1950 the engine was at Staveley (MR). It moved to Saltley in 1953 and was withdrawn from there in February 1959. Stored at St. Andrews Yard, Derby and scrapped two years later in February 1961 by Looms at Spondon.   Face repainted; back ex loco

178.    Cast-iron Notice. “L.D. & E.C.R. Trespassers will be prosecuted.  By Order.”  Original lineside condition; white lettering on dark blue.  The Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast went from Chesterfield Market Place to Pyewipe Jct., with branches to Beighton, Markham Colliery, etc., and was principally a coal carrying line taken over by the G.C.R. in 1905.  An uncommon sign as many were replaced by G.C.R. signs, especially east of the Trent.

 

179.    G.W.R.  Programme of Working of Coaches in through trains from and to London and North and West Expresses.  Also slip coaches.  May and June 1905; 40 pp.  Includes trains to New Milford, South Wales, etc.

 

180.    Southern Railway Bye-laws relating to Folkestone Harbour made in pursuance of the Explosives Act 1875. 15 pp.; includes a diagram of the docks showing the boundaries of the harbour.

Instructions to the Staff for the Dispatch of Merchandise Traffic and the Working of Goods in Small Consignments by Station Trucks.   October 16th 1893 u.f.n. 108 pp. The section on working of station trucks gives a lot of information relating to particular trains and stations, e.g. Carmarthen and Pencader.  Not bad condition for its age.

185.    B.R. (S) Operating Notice. Circular No. 159 Engine Head Signals 4.58 “Golden Arrow”.  Dover Marine to Victoria concerning the express from December 12th to 17th 1955, issued by the District Traffic Superintendent, Orpington 9.12.55”; one page.

187.    Negatives.  Woodstock branch Pre-Closure.  6 shots of 1420 on branch passenger train; all of very high quality giving very good detail of Blenheim and Woodstock and Shipston on Cherwell Halt.  Negs measure 3½” x 2¼”.

198.    Plan.  “L.M. & S.R. Countesthorpe”. Fully coloured station and track plan     of the station on the ex Midland Ry line from Rugby to Leicester, and  showing the proposed raising of the brickwork of Down Platform.  Quite detailed;   even showing location of dwarf signal, cast-iron urinal, nameboards, etc.  On    thin paper; some staining along the bottom; taped edge tear, but could be framed.

 

199.    B.R. (E) Diagram of Signals: Barnsley Junction (Penistone). Also shows Willey Bridge Jct., Oxspring Jct. and Huddersfield Jct signal boxes. Folds     out to 156” x 13”.

 

200.         Private colliery owner wagonplate. “Larkhall, Colliery Co. No. 20 John  Law.” Oval cast-iron 8” x 5½”.  Face repainted; back original.  Larkhall situated in South Lanarkshire. Scottish colliery company wagon plates are scarce.
