They were obtained from a farmer in Nateby Nr Kirby Stephen in 1984, whose father had obtained them from a wrecked carriage after an accident at the top of the valley (could refer to either Ais Gill or Mallerstang disasters). Patent Railway Passenger Communication, a letter to The Directors of The Newcastle & Tynemouth Railway Co, From William Chubb & Solomon Fry of Stone Bridge Bristol, 17/9/1864. At the top is a detailed illustration of a tender loco 2-2-2, "Rapid" (oval nameplate), with two x four wheel coaches in black, the communication tube is shown in red, title at top & then description of equipment to call guard & the guard to contact driver, it refers to a murder on The N&T Rly & suggests this scheme would prevent such occurances in future & prove cheap to install, avoiding adaption of coaches, which would be necessary if similar schemes were adopted, folded in four, with title on outside (similar to Deed), beautifully produced & very attractive, black/red on blue.
