309*    BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “GENTLEMEN” recovered from the offices at SKEGNESS station. 36”x18”. Good colour and shine with just a couple of small face chips.

 

310     LT enamel cab destination board, double sided, “RICKMANSWORTH/ AMERSHAM”. Fair condition with face chips and, unusually, the holes for hanging located towards the bottom.

 

311       SHEDPLATE “65B”  (St Rollox 1950-66). Ex loco condition.

 

312*      CARRIAGE PRINT “The Cinque Port of New Romney, Kent by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region Series(A). This is the 4th of the set offered today.

 

313*      WORKSPLATE “North British Locomotive Company Ltd Glasgow 1960” from a BR Class 22 D6305/8-34. This plate has the number “6319” pencilled on the back. Alloy diamond, 9¾”x4”, in ex loco condition.

 

314     LT Underground frieze enamel “HOLLOWAY ROAD”, blue edged from the Piccadilly Line station. 50”x10”. GC.

 

315*      Sheffield tram stop “Cars STOP to City”, alloy, double sided, black on cream with red edge. 22”x12½”. GC.

 

316       LNER glass front from a buffet food display cabinet with large, 8” wide, LNER “winking eye” motif etched into the shaped top. 37”x28½”. Presented on a wooden display stand. VGC. Must be removed on the day.

 

317*      Nameplate “BRAMHALL” . The plate is straight and is in the form of a GWR County plate with brass letters and beading on a steel backplate – possibly industrial or made up for someone? 53” x 7” with red painted background.

 

318       GNR cast iron notice “BEWARE OF THE TRAINS” with “GNR” initials cast on the front. 24”x12”. Ex lineside condition.

 

319*      “Met. Rly.” [so titled] cast iron trespass notice. 22½”x16½”. Front repainted.

 

320     BR(S) fully flanged TOTEM “WOOLWICH ARSENAL”. Several face repairs but not an easy totem to obtain – last in auction in 1995.

 

321*      WORKSPLATE  “The English Electric Co Ltd Vulcan Works, Newton-le-Willows, England. No 3497/ D928. 1964”  from BR class 37 D6940/37240. Only recently withdrawn and sold for preservation, this loco is already working, still in its Engineers livery, on the Llangollen Railway. Rectangular chromed brass, 10¼”x4½”, in ex loco condition.

 

322*      Brass Pullman table lamp, 20” tall. Fair unrestored condition. No shade and not marked with Company or Car name.

339*      BR(Sc) half flanged TOTEM “GALASHIELS”. Excellent colour and shine with just the usual minor edge chipping. A desirable Waverley Route totem in exceptionally nice condition.

347*    South African Railways bi-lingual brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “E 1329” from a Class 6E-1 BO-BO electric built by Union Carriage of Nigel [SA] and AEI Electrics c1972 for heavy main line duty. Many are now stored but some survive in service. Ex loco condition.

 

348     BR brass cased pressure gauge, 0-320lbs, the dial marked “B.R. (Std)”  and the back stamped “2953”. Reputedly from a BR Class 9F 2-10-0. GC but the rear cover is missing.

 

349*      WORKSPLATE “LNER 4093 1897” from GNR Class J4, LNER Class J3, 0-6-0 No 4093/4114/64114, built by Dubs & Co, Works No 3548 and withdrawn from Hitchin 10/52. Brass oval, 9”x5”, the front polished but not painted, the back cleaned. The number “4093” has been partly erased but is still legible and there is no renumbering strip.

 

350*      Single line brass key token “MALLAIG JCT-ANNAT 9”, the first section of the West Highland Line extension from Fort William to Mallaig.

 

351*      BR(NE) fully flanged black edged TOTEM “STOCKTON”, surely one of the most famous names of all from the very birth of the railways. VGC with one face repair not affecting the letters and the usual edge repairs.

 

352       BR(S) Station Master’s peaked cap by Compton Son & Webb, with a black oak leaf band upon which is embroidered “Station Master” in gold wire script with the peak edging also in gold wire. The badge is green felt with a gilt lion, wheel and crown badge surrounded by a gold wire wreath. Used but VGC.

 

353       GNR wooden cased telegraph instrument with front mounted projecting “desk”. VG restored condition.

 

354*      LMS coat of arms transfer mounted on a framed maroon board, 16”x16”. GC.

 

355*      BR(M) enamel  station sign “CAR PARK TICKETS OBTAINABLE AT TICKET OFFICE”. 24”x24”. VGC, possibly lacquered.

 

356     LNER cast iron gate notice. 40”x3¾”. Front restored, back in red primer.

 

357*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Atlantic Coast Express, London and the West Country” by Richard Ward from the Southern Region Series (B). Final print of today’s set of 4.

 

358       Tilley hanging station lamp with polished copper parts and complete with its glass globe. VGC.

 

359*      BR(E) enamel doorplate “PARCELS”. 18”x3½”. GC with the usual edge chips and minor scratches.

 

360       LMS signal box nameboard “KENTISH TOWN JUNCTION”, wood with metal letters. 124”x10”. Generally in good unrestored condition.

 

361*      BR(NE) enamel posterboard heading, totem shape with black edged letters, 24”x7”. VG colour and shine but several chip repairs.

 

362*    GCR cast iron cover marked “GCRy Gas Syphon Cover”. 12” x14”, Front  repainted.

 

363     SHEDPLATE “56B”  (Ardsley 1956-65, the code later used for Healey Mills). Front repainted.

 

364*      BR(E) half flanged TOTEM “CROWLE CENTRAL”. The totem has a repaired crease at the left hand end and is rather mottled but the “CENTRAL” appears in the lower panel and there are not  many dark blue examples with this layout.

 

365*    CARRIAGE PRINT “Loch Linnhe and Morven Hills, Western Highlands” by Jack Merriott from the Scottish series. Framed and glazed.

 

366*      BR(M) D/R enamel posterboard heading “British Railways”. 25”x6”. GC apart from some enamel damage down the centre.

 

367     GER Tyers wooden cased block instrument for double line working, with two large brass flaps. A lovely old instrument, believed to date from the 1880s, despite missing one needle and a piece of the base.

 

368*    Carriage Board “BIRMINGHAM-LEICESTER”, double sided painted wood, cream on maroon, 28”x3¼”. VG original condition.

 

369       GWR wooden cased ticket cabinet with tambour sliding door and internal divided ticket racks. 17½”x26”x9½”. Requires some attention but nevertheless an attractive small cabinet.

 

370*    BR(Sc) enamel doorplate “PRIVATE”. 18”x3½”. A few chips but not bad overall.

 

371*    GNR cast iron bridgeplate “GNR 5” with the casting number “B99” below. 17”x13”. Repainted.

 

372*      Signal Box diagram “HIGHDYKE” (1962), an East Coast Main Line box at the junction with the Highdyke mineral line. 50"x25". Rolled.

 

373       GNR plan “ABBOTS RIPTON STATION”, an East Coast Main Line station north of Huntingdon, closed in 1958. 75”x28”. Rolled.

 

374*      BR(E) enamel doorplate “LADIES WAITING ROOM”. 18”x6”. Fair condition with slight mottling and the usual edge chips.

 

375*      CARRIAGE PRINT “The Cinque Port of Hastings, Sussex” by Jack Merriott from the Southern region Series (A). The final print of the set.

 

376       SHEDPLATE “41H” (Staveley GC 1958-65 when it closed). Repainted.

 

377*      Single line brass key token with a brass plate “NEW HOLLAND - BARTON-ON-HUMBER 6” rivetted on. An ex GCR North Lincolnshire section.

 

378*    BR(W) fully flanged TOTEM “TWYFORD”, an ex GWR main line station in Berkshire. VG colour and shine with a face chip not affecting the letters.

 

379*      Enamel notice “GR [with crown] Persons Throwing Stones at the Telegraphs will be prosecuted”. White on red, 6”x8”, curved to fit a telegraph pole. GC with edge chips only.

 

380       Ticket dating press, cast iron, with “Edmondson’s Patent” makers plate on top, together with a quantity of unboxed type.

 

381       LT Underground enamel station sign “BARKINGSIDE”, a Central line station on the Chigwell loop. These signs formed the centre section of the large station targets. White on dark blue, 58” x 10”. GC.

 

382       SHEDPLATE “16B” (Kirkby-in-Ashfield 1955-63, then Annesley 1963 until January 1966 and finally Colwick for the remainder of 1966, its last year of steam). Repainted.

 

383*      Single line fibre tablet “ALSTON-LAMBLEY”, the final section of the ex NER Haltwhistle-Alston branch closed by BR in 1976, but part remains open as the South Tynedale Railway.

 

384*    Caledonian Railway cast iron signal finial with all four feet intact. 24” tall. Repainted.

 

385     Caledonian Railway wooden office chair inscribed on the backrest “CR” in entwined letters.

 

386       WAGONPLATES, Registration Plates, LMS 1947 Standard 16 Tons 13781, and BR(M) 1950 Standard 14 Tons 182791. Both repainted with undamaged centre bars.  (2)

 

387*      LT enamel “dolly” bus stop, circular 13” diameter, red and black on white. GC.

 

388       Birmingham City Transport [untitled] bus stop, double sided, “Buses Stop Here by Request”. Circular 20” diameter, blue on white. GC.

 

389       Single line alloy tablet  “BURES-SUDBURY 19”, the final section of the still open ex GER branch from Marks Tey to Sudbury.

 

390     LT flanged enamel sign “POLICE NOTICE NO PARKING PENALTY £50”. Blue on white, 30”x20”. Excellent condition.

 

391*    GER fully titled cast iron trespass notice, 21½”x12½”, the front repainted white on blue a long time ago.

 

392       GWR long sleeved waistcoat with four small brass “GWR” roundel buttons [one missing]. VGC, probably unused and only about a 34” chest.

 

393*      McInnes-Dobbie Patent Steam Indicator in its original fitted case, with instruction leaflets. These were fitted to steam locomotives undergoing tests to ascertain efficiency of cylinders and valves.

 

394       CARRIAGE PRINT “Newark Castle, Nottinghamshire” by Kenneth Steel from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

395*    BR(E) fully flanged TOTEM “SWINDERBY”. This superb Lincolnshire totem has a fine colour and shine with no face repairs.

 

396*      Signal box nameboard “BARROW HILL JCT BOX”, painted wood. 92”x11”. GC. Must be removed on the day.

 

397*      CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “SNCF 141.P.206” from a French Railways [SNCF] standard gauge Class 141-P 4-cylinder compound 2-8-2 designed by Chapelon in 1942 and built by Franco-Belge at Croyere in 1946, Works No. 2877. Most were withdrawn by the late 1960s. Alloy, 20”x14½” including top “handle”. Generally in ex loco condition but no paint on the front.

 

398       SHEDPLATE “40A” (Lincoln 1950-73, closed to steam in 1964). Repainted.

 

399       Collection of luggage labels displayed in 4 glazed frames, a mix of all regions. Must be viewed.

 

400*      POSTER BR(LMR) D/R “COLWYN BAY” by AJ Wilson. The town and beach viewed from the nearby cliffs. Generally VGC apart from slight edge damage. Rolled.

 

401*      POSTER LNER Q/R “YORK MINSTER” by Fred Taylor [undated], highlighting the stained glass windows. Folded in half and repaired in two places with brown tape around the edges.

 

402*    POSTER BR(M) Q/R Cuneo “NIGHT FREIGHT”. Classic night view of steam and diesel power moving freight in the 60’s from a Cuneo painting. Folded with slight loss on some folds and masking tape round the edges but still an impressive sight.

 

403     POSTER BR(E) D/R “CONTINENT VIA HARWICH”. Royston Cooper arty view of the Continent [or Harwich!] in excellent rolled condition.

 

404*    POSTER BR(E) D/R “AWAY FOR A DAY”. Published in August 1949, this must be one of the earliest posters with a totem used as the BR logo. It has a picture of St Pauls and Big Ben at the top with fares to Eastern locations such as Felixstowe 10/6 and Lincoln 16/-. Good rolled condition with one central fold mark and a small repaired tear.

 

405*      CARRIAGE PRINT  “Brig O’Balgownie near Aberdeen” by Edward Lawson from the Scottish series. Framed and glazed.

 

406     Station Platform Ticket Machine in ex platform condition, 36” x 13” approx. Must be removed on the day.

 

407       SHEDPLATE “34E” (Neasden 1950-58, New England 1958-68 but closed to steam in 1965). Ex loco condition.

 

408*      Shell petrol can, very old and well used, with “Shell” trademark embossed on front and back. Rectangular 10”x11”x6” with separate slide-in cylindrical “Shell Motor Oil” can in VGC.

 

409     LT enamel target “RUISLIP GARDENS”, a Central Line station on the West Ruislip branch. Red and blue on white and attractive small size, 18”x14”. VGC.

 

410     COACHPLATE “BR Swindon Lot No 30335 1957” from a Swindon built diesel multiple unit. Oval cast iron, 7”x5”. Stripped but not repainted.

 

411       SHEDPLATE “65A” (Eastfield 1950-73, closed to steam in 1966). Repainted.

 

412*      BR(Sc) flanged enamel doorplate “TICKETS”. 18”x3½”. Good colour and shine but a couple of large repairs at one end.

 

413     GER 8” dial spring-driven, roundhead wall clock. The back of the case is branded “GER” in three places and is also marked with its location “Yarmouth Vauxhall”, the terminus of the line from Norwich. The face is marked with the makers name “Smiths Empire” and, in ghost letters, BR(E) and the BR clock number. VGC and working order.

 

414     BRIDGEPLATE “BR(M) 340”, from a bridge near Georgemas Junction station, Britain’s most northerly junction. Oval cast iron, 17½”x11½”. Front restored.

 

415     BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “WAITING ROOM”, recovered from offices at SKEGNESS station. 36”x18”. Good  colour and shine with just some edge chipping.

 

416       Collection of black and white photographs of LNER locomotives in both pre and post grouping livery. Must be viewed.  (100)

 

417       CARRIAGE PRINTS, “Travel in 1855 Maryport and Carlisle Railway Train, Crampton No 12” in an original glazed frame and “Travel in 1870 London North Western Railway Train for Broad Street at Richmond”, unframed stuck to glass, both by C.Hamilton Ellis from the LMR Travel in series.  (2)

 

418       NER bridge plate “132” removed from the closed Barnsdale Tunnel on the Hull & Barnsley Railway. Oval cast iron, 13”x7”.

 

419*      BR(Sc) fully flanged TOTEM “SPRINGBURN”. This totem has a number of well executed face repairs to look good.

 

420       NER coat-of-arms transfer mounted on a maroon board. 15½”x15½”. GC.

 

421*      BR(M) fully flanged TOTEM  “PENKRIDGE”, the only station still open between Wolverhampton and Stafford. VGC with no face chips but face drilled holes at both ends have been filled.

 

422       POSTER BR(E) D/R “Felixstowe”, showing a pretty blond welcoming you to the Suffolk resort  with typical beach scene behind her. VGC. Folded.

 

423*      Spears Games “RAIL RACE” from the late 1930’s / early 1940’s with a picture of a Streamlined Coronation on the front. One version is complete with a good box and instructions but with some sellotape repairs. The other is in worse condition but has most of the contents for spares.  (2)

 

424       Single line brass key token “HIGHDYKE-COLSTERWORTH MINES 7”, the first section of the Highdyke mineral line which served quarries around Stainby.

 

425       SHEDPLATE “38A” (Colwick 1950-58). Repainted with a weld hardly visible from the front.

 

426       Southern Railway long sleeved waistcoat with a full set of six small “S.R” brass buttons. Small size, probably about a 36” chest. VGC, not much used.

 

427       Enamel sign “RAC Rescue Service” with queen’s crown above. Blue and red on white, 21½”x25”. Excellent condition, probably unused.

 

428*    BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “TO PLATFORM 1” with feathered pointing arrow. 24”x18”. GC with edge chips only.

 

429*    CARRIAGE PRINT Wartime Carriage Notice regarding Precautions during Blackout when leaving Trains. Presented in an original Southern Railway frame.

 

430*    GER [but not so marked] “torpedo” carriage roof  ventilator. VGC.  Unrestored.

 

431     BR(E) carriage compartment carpet, floral and leaf pattern, with “BR(E)” in script letters at both ends. 67”x29”. Good, well used condition. In the centre a circular hole has been made and edged with metal, presumably to accommodate a table leg. (See lot 102 for the LNER version).

 

432       BR(E) enamel station sign “PASSENGERS CROSS THE LINE BY THE FOOTBRIDGE ONLY”. 36”x24”. GC with only a couple of face chips.

 

433*      Cast iron sign “SHUT” in 6” high letters. 24”x9” including side fixing lugs. Unrestored. Origin unknown.  A peremptory gate notice without all the unnecessary patter?

 

434*      Departure board plates, all East Anglian destinations, “Beccles”, “Corton”, “Gorleston”, “Halesworth”, “Oulton Broad S.” and Yarmouth S.T.” [=South Town]. Alloy, white on blue, 17”x2½”.  (6)

 

435       SHEDPLATE “16D” (Mansfield 1950-55, Annesley 1958-63, Nottingham 1963-67). Front repainted. On the ex loco back is chalked “92010”, the number of a BR Class 9F 2-10-0 which was shedded at Annesley during the time it used this code.

 

436*      BR(W) fully flanged TOTEM “HANWELL”, an ex GWR main line station between Ealing Broadway and Southall. VGC with just a couple of fairly minor face repairs.

 

437       BR 3-aspect handlamp, LMS pattern, complete with copper vessel, LMS burner and all glasses. VG restored condition.

 

438     CARRIAGE PRINT “Cavendish, Suffolk” by FW Baldwin from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

439*      BR(E) flanged enamel station sign  “TICKETS & PARCELS”. 24”x18”. VGC.

 

440     LNER leather cased tape measure, clearly stamped “LNER” and in usable condition.

 

441     GNR fully titled cast iron notice “Beware of the Trains Look both Up and Down the Line before you Cross”. 22”x12”. Front repainted, white on blue, a long time ago.

 

442       POSTER BR(E) D/R “LONDON” by Blake, showing typical tourist attractions of the capital. VGC. Folded.

 

443       Eastern Counties fully titled “Bus and Coach Stop”. Double sided enamel, blue and red on cream, 16”14”. GC with minimal chipping.

 

444        Greenalls pub advert, cast in fibreglass, depicting a Roman goddess blowing a horn. White and gold on green, 24”x16”. GC overall. These adverts are often to be seen fitted to the outside walls of pubs but this example is double sided and free-standing and appears to have been used as an indoor advert.

 

445*      Signal Box Diagram “CORBY GLEN” (1962), an East Coast Main Line box between Peterborough and Grantham. 87”x21”. Rolled.

 

446       LMS brass locomotive cab gauge glass protectors, one is complete and in ex loco condition, the other has no glass or back.  (2)

 

447       GER octagonal BRIDGEPLATE “856”. 9½”x8”. Front repainted.

 

448       Cast iron notice “BEWARE OF TRAINS”, untitled but possibly BR. 24”x12”. Ex lineside condition. Cracked.

 

449*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Sulgrave Manor, near Helmdon, Northants” by John Bee from the LNER series. Unframed.

 

450       BR 3-and 4-aspect handlamps, both unrestored with cracked front lenses. The 3-aspect is complete, the 4-aspect has a pie-crust top but no internal glasses or burner.  (2)
