151       POSTER D/R “Take your Car by LNER” (April 1936), showing a car being loaded onto a train and detailing the cost. Some damage at the folds and edge wear.

 

152*      POSTER  BR Q/R “Clyde Coast & Loch Lomond”, a pictorial map of the west coast of Scotland. Fair condition only with damage and edge losses.

 

153*      POSTER Underground D/R 1932. Impressionist view of wooded countryside in a period when the adverts were aimed at getting people to use the tube to get out of London. Excellent condition. Rolled.

 

154     POSTER BR(W) D/R Cutting travel time 1962. The poster was to advertise the new 2700 H.P. Diesel locomotives on the London-Birmingham-Wolverhampton- Shrewsbury- Chester and Birkenhead service starting in September 1962. Excellent condition. Rolled.

 

155     Norfolk County Council Cast Iron Road sign top. The outside diameter of the polo shaped sign is 13” and it is inscribed “NORFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL-BUXTON”. It comes complete with the fitting that attaches it to the top of a signpost.

 

156*      BR(Sc) half flanged TOTEM “LONGNIDDRY”, an East Coast Main Line station east of Edinburgh. No face chips but some rust staining and possibly lacquered. A rare totem only once before in auction.

 

157*      BR(E) enamel D/R posterboard heading “BRITISH RAILWAYS”. 25½”x6” with rounded corners. GC overall with mainly edge chips.

 

158       A box of 35 (originally 36) “Sherwood Vaporite” brass and ceramic hand lamp burners in their original box.

 

159*   Queensland Government Railways BOILER NUMBERPLATE “No 818” from a 3’6” gauge Class C17 4-8-0 built by Armstrong Whitworth in 1927, Works No 866, to a 1920 mixed traffic design but used successfully on all duties and lasted until 1970. Rectangular brass, 18”x7”, with scalloped corners and slightly convex to fit the boiler. Front repainted.

 

160       BR(W) flanged enamel station sign “GENTLEMEN”. 36”x18”. Fair condition with face chips and fading

162*      BR(S) fully flanged TOTEM “ERITH”, an ex SECR Kent station on the Dartford line. VGC with no face chips, just a few minor scratches.

 

163*      Single line tablet “DINNINGTON SOUTH/MALTBY 13”, a section of the South Yorkshire Joint line near Doncaster. Alloy.

169*      South African Railways brass chime locomotive whistle stamped “SAR” and complete with operating lever. 14” tall. Ex loco condition.

 

170*      Cast Iron Bridgeplate “BR 193”. 17½”x11½”. Front repainted.

 

171       BR(E) enamel station sign “WAY OUT”. 48”x12”. VG colour and shine but a few face chips.

 

172*      GER 3-aspect sliding-knob handlamp stamped “ALRESFORD” and with the date 1920, from a station on the Clacton-on-Sea branch. Restored and complete with matching vessel and burner and red and green glasses.

 

173       Cast iron “D” WAGONPLATE “LNER-S 804270. The letters have been repainted, otherwise in ex wagon condition.

 

174*    GNR cast iron fire fender, attractive small size just 30” long with “GNR” cast in the top in ornate entwined letters. VGC.

 

175*    BR(E) fully flanged TOTEM “BRIMSDOWN”. The first appearance in auction for this very rare and sought after totem from the Liverpool Street to Bishops Stortford line. Excellent condition.

 

176        GNR station plan “DONINGTON ROAD” (1906), a station on the Spalding-Sleaford line. 45”x20”. Rolled.

 

177       GWR brass cased pressure gauge, 0-200lbs, the brass dial marked “GWR” in large engraved and filled letters. 7” diameter.  Ex loco condition with base fitting.

189*    BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “LADIES AND WAITING ROOM”. 24”x18”. Good colour and shine with just a couple of small face chips.

 

190*      GWR post-grouping cast iron doorplate “PARCELS AND CLOAK ROOM”. 19”X8”. Front repainted in chocolate and cream.

 

191*    Cast iron bridgeplate “M&GN 70”. 13”x9”. Front repainted.

 

192*      BR(W) fully flanged TOTEM “BORDESLEY”, the first station out of Snow Hill on the ex GWR main line to Paddington. VG colour and shine with a couple of chip repairs not affecting the letters.

 

193     GER wooden cased Tyers block bell with underslung bell and an engraved brass plate “YARMOUTH”. VG unrestored condition.

 

194     Station plan “GN and LNW Joint Railway General Plan of BINGHAM ROAD STATION” (1915 correction), a station on the Nottingham-Melton Mowbray line which closed in 1951. 46”x24”. Rolled.

196*      LT Underground District Line enamel cab destination board “DAGENHAM-UPMINSTER”, the longer version with steel ends and with the initials of the destinations stamped in so that they could be found in a rack. GC with some chipping.

203       Wooden cased railway telephone switchboard with a dial and numerous extensions and designed to stand on a desk or shelf. 40”x11”x10”. Unrestored.

 

204       BR(M) flanged enamel station sign “GENTLEMEN”, 36”x18”. Good colour and shine with only minor chipping.

 

205       WORKSPLATE “LMS Built Derby” [no year]. Oval brass, 10¼”x6”. Ex loco front, with paint on the back partly removed.

 

206       LNER cast iron doorplate “TRANSHIP SHED”, 15”x4¾”. Front repainted white on blue.

 

207*      LNER Coronation ware silver plated 2 pint teapot, by Walker & Hall. This lovely item is in as used condition and displays the LNER Art Deco “high speed” lettering on the side.

 

208     Cast iron bridgeplate “LNER 25” with casting number “B100” at the bottom. 17”x13”. Front repainted white on blue.

 

209       SHEDPLATE “41B” (Sheffield Grimesthorpe 1958-64, Sheffield Darnall 1964-65). Repainted.

 

210       GCR official publication “Per Rail” (1913), generally a good clean copy for its age and complete with all three maps, although these have been repaired.

 

211*      Southern Railway Bulleid brass headlamp, complete and original with bulb holder and switch and in unrestored condition.

 

212*    BR(E) small enamel station sign “NO ENTRY”  in its original wooden frame, 9”x8” overall. VG colour and shine and only minor enamel damage.

 

213       Signal Box  telephone, wooden cased with bakelite handset. Medium size, 9”x13½”x5”. Unrestored.

 

214*      BR(E) half flanged TOTEM “STEVENAGE”. Fair condition with chips and fading and small losses adjacent to the flanges.

 

215*      CARRIAGE PRINT  “The Cinque Port of Hythe, Kent” by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region series (A). This is the 3rd of the set offered today

 

216*      Single line key token “CRIANLARICH-DALMALLY”, the first still open section of the Callander and Oban line. Brass.

 

217       MR/LMS station sign “GENTLEMEN” with pointing arrow, wood with metal letters. 38”x6”. Good unrestored condition.

 

218*    GWR fully titled cast iron gate notice. 30”x10½”. Front restored.

 

219*      WORKSPLATE “London & North Eastern Railway 60903 Darlington Works 1940” from a V2 Class 2-6-2 No 4874/903/60903. A long time Kings Cross loco, it had a final short spell at New England from where it was withdrawn 11/62. Brass oval 9”x5”, the front repainted and polished.

 

220       SHEDPLATE “40B” (Immingham 1950-66). Repainted a long time ago.

 

221*      Cast iron crane capacity plate “…8 tons…”, origin unknown. 40”x5½”. Front repainted.

 

222       “Great Northern Railway Plan of CALEDONIAN GOODS YARD” [undated], a plan of the GNR’s main London yard just north of Kings Cross.40”x24”. Rolled.

224      BR(M) flanged enamel sign “NO SMOKING” with totem logo above. 24”x12”. Good colour and shine with just a couple of face chips.

 

225       Signal box telephone, plastic/metal cased, incorporating a circuit card titled “LMR Telephone Circuit ROSE GROVE-NELSON” dated 11/72. VGC.

 

226       BR(S) fully flanged light green TOTEM “EWELL EAST”. VGC apart from slight edge chipping and one small repaired face chip.

 

227       LNER signalbox diagram “MARKET RASEN”, undated but 1920s/1930s. 50”x21”. Rolled.

 

228*      South African Railways English language brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “2615” with the Class “GCA” below, from a 3’6” gauge 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garratt built by Krupp in 1928, Works No. 1058, as a development of the earlier GC Class for llightweight branches. All were out of use by 1975. Oval, 21”x14”. Generally in ex loco condition but little original paint remains.

 

229*      SHEDPLATE “70D” (Basingstoke 1950-63, Eastleigh until 1973 but closed to steam 1967). Repainted.

 

230       Enamel advertising sign “McDougall’s the Original Dip”. Blue and white on yellow. 36”x20”. Fair condition with face chips.

 

231*      WORKSPLATE “London & North Eastern Railway 5441 1914” from Great Central Railway Class 1A, LNER Class B8, Robinson 4-6-0 No 5441/1352, built at Gorton Works. It was withdrawn 5/47, so never acquired its intended BR No 61352. Apart from a short spell at March, it spent its life on the GC Section, latterly at Annesley for working the fast coal trains to Woodford Halse. Oval cast iron, 9”x5”, the front cleaned but not repainted and the back primed a long time ago.

 

232*    GNR cast iron milepost top marked “134L” on two right angled faces, from an East Coast  Main Line location between Tuxford and Retford. Repainted.

 

233*      WORKSPLATE “North British Locomotive Coy Ltd Hyde Park Works Glasgow No 24686 1941” from a LMS Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order entering traffic as War Department No 378 and sent to Middle East Forces in Iran. On return it became 48254 in BR days and was shedded at Northwich, Annesley, Burton and Westhouses. Withdrawn 9/66. Circular brass 7¾” diameter. Front restored. Although stamped “90354” on the back (an Austerity 2-8-0) this is erroneous.

 

234*      BR(E) enamel station sign “PLATFORMS 2 3” with feathered arrows pointing left and right. 36”x18”.

 

235       GNR wooden cased tapper-less block bells with underslung bells, both in fair ex signal box condition. (2)

 

236*      NER/LNER signal box name board “ERYHOLME”, wood with metal letters, from a box between Darlington and Northallerton. 51”x11”. Repainted.

241       SR Commissionaires frock coat with gold braid on collar and cuffs, union jacks embroidered on both lapels and large plain brass buttons. Unused with the makers label “Southern Railway Commissionaire Paris” still attached. Size not stated but would fit a 36”/38” chest.

 

242       Enamel advertising signs “Rocklight Paraffin” black and red on yellow, and “Royal Standard Paraffin” black and green on white. Both are double sided projecting signs and in fair condition without major face chips. (2)

 

243*      Single line fibre tablet “CROWLE TOWN - BELTON 2”, a Lincolnshire section of the ex Axholme Joint Railway.

 

244     NER cast iron 2-part gate notice “Shut this Gate” 17”x2¾” and “Penalty for Neglect £2” 21”x2¾”. Both repainted but not matching.  (2)

 

245     BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “GENTLEMEN”. 36”x12”. VGC with only minor edge chips.

 

246     Signalbox diagram “ESSENDINE” (1964), an amended diagram imposed over the original. 70”x24”. Rolled.

 

247     SHEDPLATE “32A” (Norwich 1950-73, closed to steam 1962). Ex loco condition.

 

248*    BR(M) fully flanged TOTEM “CARNFORTH”. Some loss of shine but only quite minor face repairs.

 

249*       (GWR) brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “8484” from a 9400 Class 0-6-0PT built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd in 1952, Works No 7454, as sub-contractor for Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd, whose allotted Works No was 1831. It was shedded at Cardiff East Dock, Barry, Cathays, Aberbeeg, Cardiff Canton and finally Radyr from where it was withdrawn 6/65. Front repainted.

 

250*      GNR signal lamp case brass plated “Great Northern Railway No 10360” and also plated “ SALTFLEETBY UP HOME” which was on the Louth-Mablethorpe-Willoughby branch, closed in 1960. GC overall but some damage to the handle and base and no interior.

 

251*      WAGONPLATE “Yorkshire Railway Waggon Co Limited Wakefield Owners F276” with a Yorkshire rose and leaf pattern. Circular 7½” diameter. Unrestored.

 

252*    BR(M) flanged enamel station sign “DRINKING WATER“. 18”x6”. Excellent condition.

 

253*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Ocean Liner Express, Southampton Docks-London” by Richard Ward from the Southern Region Series(B). This is the 3rd of the set of 4 offered today.

255*    WORKSPLATE “British Railways Crewe Built 1964 Power Equipment by Brush Electrical Engineering Company Ltd and Sulzer” from a BR Class 47 Diesel. Locomotives built that year were D1550-D1645. Rectangular alloy 13”x6½”. Ex loco condition.

 

256*      BR(E) enamel doorplate “STAFF ONLY”. 18”x3½”. Good colour and shine but a couple of face repairs and the usual edge chips.

 

257*      Carriage Board “DERBY-NOTTINGHAM”, double sided painted wood, cream on maroon. 28”x3¼”. Good used condition.

 

258     “GN & LNW Joint” [so marked on top] cast iron boundary post, 35” tall, complete with full length of post and foot. Repainted.

265*      LNER / early BR(E) enamel sign “PEASCLIFFE TUNNEL 967 YARDS”, a tunnel on the East Coast Main Line north of Grantham. 48”x24”. VG colour and shine with a few face chips and the usual edge chips.

 

266*      WAGONPLATE “Eaton Railway 58 1896”. The Eaton Railway was a 15” gauge line built by Sir Arthur Heywood in 1896 to connect the Duke of Westminster’s country residence, Eaton Hall near Chester, to Balderton, the nearest GWR main line station, for the movement of the large quantity of coal needed for the Hall’s heating system. The Railway remained a private line until it closed in 1946. Brass oval 6¼”x4¼”. Unrestored.

 

267*      Signal box telephone, wooden cased with bakelite handset.  Large version, 19”x9½”x5”, in sound ex box condition.

 

268       BR(M) locomotive headlamp complete with matching interior and slide-in red lens. VGC, unrestored. A note inside the lamp indicates that it came from Stockport.

 

269       Prussian State Railways pre World War 1 circular brass eagle emblem, lettered “KPEV”, as carried on locomotive cabsides. Circular, 9¾” diameter, in ex loco condition.

 

270       BR(E) flanged enamel station sign “PARCELS”. 36”x12”. Fair condition with face and edge chips and corner knocks.

 

271       Midland Railway untitled cast iron notice “STICK NO BILLS”. Rectangular 17”x8½” with scalloped corners. Front repainted white on green.

 

272*      SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE  “48701” from a LMS Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 built by the SR at Brighton in 1944 for the LMS. Its later sheds were Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Gorton and Heaton Mersey. Withdrawn 3/67.

 

273*    WORKSPLATE “Built by British Rail Engineering Limited. Doncaster Works. 1979” from BR Class 56 No 56068 that went new to Toton 11/79. Rectangular alloy 7” x 5”, the ex loco back stamped “56068”.

 

274     SHEDPLATE “32B” (Ipswich 1950-68, closed to steam 1959). Front repainted.

 

275*    BR(E) fully flanged TOTEM “MABLETHORPE”, a much sought after totem from the Lincolnshire seaside town. VGC with no face chips but some surface scratches.

277*    CARRIAGE PRINT “Wisbech, Cambridgeshire” by Gyrth Russell from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

278*      BR(E) flanged enamel sign “BRITISH RAILWAYS PERMANENT WAY DEPARTMENT”, a rare sign from Peterborough’s New England depot. 60”x15” with excellent colour and shine and no face chips.

 

279       Original painting by the renowned railway artist George Heiron, who died last year, of LMS No 6220 “CORONATION” in streamlined blue livery on a rake of maroon coaches forming a Euston-Glasgow express. Commissioned in 1966, the painting is accompanied by original correspondence from the artist including a preliminary sketch. A superbly painted and highly evocative picture in a gilded, glazed wooden frame, 33”x23” overall.

 

280*      BR(W) half flanged TOTEM “CARDIFF QUEEN STREET”, the city’s ex Taff Vale Railway main city centre station. GC with minimal chipping but some face scuffs and scratches.

 

281       Road sign “HUNTS C.C. PUBLIC FOOTPATH CYCLING PROHIBITED”. Cast alloy, 14” x 12”. Unrestored.

287       Timetable “Hull Barnsley & West Riding Junction Railway & Dock Co” from 1st October 1893, 34pp plus card covers. 8½”x5½” stamped “Gratuitous Copy”. Excellent condition, probably never used, as the map which is secured inside the front cover has never been opened

292       GNR wooden lamp yoke stamped “GNR” on the back and painted “GNR HATFIELD (MARSHMOOR)” on the front, used at the famous ECML Marshmoor goods yard which closed in 1968. 35” long. Good unrestored condition.

 

293*      WORKSPLATE  “London & North Eastern Railway 6307 1919” from LNER O4 Class 2-8-0 No 6307/3731/63731 built by Robert Stephenson & Co, Works No 3773, for the ROD, their No 1746, and acquired by the LNER in 1924. Its later BR sheds were Barnsley and Langwith Junction from where it was withdrawn 10/63. Oval cast iron 9”x5”, the front cleaned but not repainted, the back primed a long time ago.

 

294*      BR(M) fully flanged TOTEM “WILMSLOW”, an ex LNWR station on the Manchester-Crewe line. VG colour and shine with just one chip at the left hand bottom edge.
