1*          BR(E) enamel sign “TO FERRY BOATS PLEASE KEEP LEFT NEAR SEAWARD SIDE” with pointing arrow and BR totem above. 26”x18”. A few face chips but GC overall and possibly a unique sign.

 

2*          TENDERPLATE “BR1G 1550 1958” attached to one of the final batch of BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 Nos 92221-50 built at Crewe in 1958. Rectangular cast iron 8”x6”. Front repainted.

 

3*        GNR post mounted copper station lamp case with lamp glass (cracked) “HAVEN HOUSE” (a station on the Skegness branch) in one window. Good unrestored condition.

 

4*        Single line key token  “LOUTH / MABLETHORPE”, brass/alloy, unusual pattern with three slots to return additional keys where there was an inbalance of workings in one direction.

 

5           SHEDPLATE “2C” (Warwick 1950-58, Stourbridge Junction 1963-67). Ex loco condition.

 

6          Wooden sign with metal letters “ENGINES MUST NOT ENTER THIS WAREHOUSE”.  60”x48”.  Partly restored. Must be removed on the day.

 

7          LNER silver plated tea strainer with script initials “LNER” on one handle. Good used condition.

 

8*        LNER enamel quadroyal posterboard heading, white initials on blue, 54”x6”. GC overall with the usual edge chips.

 

9          BR(E) 4-aspect fogmans handlamp brass plated “London & North Eastern Railway SKEGNESS”. Complete. Unrestored.

 

10*      BR(W) fully flanged TOTEM “DENHAM”. Virtually mint with excellent colour and shine.

 

11*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Golden Arrow, Continental Express” by Richard Ward from the Southern Region Series(B). The print is in a mount and then framed and glazed. The full set of 4 of these sought after prints in similar mounts and frames are available today. (See lots 132, 253, 357)

 

12        GWR pre-grouping pattern cast iron doorplate “GENTLEMEN”. 18”x3½”. Front repainted.

 

13*      Midland Railway oak cased 10” dial wall clock with short drop-case, chain fusee movement and later brass plate “LMS 17342”. The face is painted “N.Ball & Son Leicester”. Complete with pendulum and key.

 

14        Bridgeplate “GNR 4”. Oval cast iron 17½”x13”. Repainted.

 

15*      Single line key token “SOHAM / BARWAY SIDING 14”, steel with brass face.

 

16*      BR(S) enamel doorplate “STATION MASTER”. 18”x6”. Edge repairs but VGC otherwise.

 

17        Pullman Car [but not so marked] brass wall-light fittings. (2)

 

18        GWR 3-leg platform bench, complete and in ex station condition, with the roundel device cast into each cast iron leg. Due to its size this item must be removed on the day.

 

19*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Town Bridge, Stamford, Lincs” by John Bee from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

20        POSTER D/R LNER “Whitby” by Andrew Johnson depicting two views-then and now. Some fold damage and wear to the bottom edge.

 

21*      LNER handlamp (GER sliding-knob pattern) stamped “HISTON” and dated 1939. Good restored condition but no interior or glasses.

 

22        Level crossing capstan, company of origin not known. Cast iron, approx 48” diameter. Heavy item to be removed on the day.

 

23        SHEDPLATE “40A” (Lincoln 1950-73, closed to steam 1964). Repainted.

 

24        BR(S) fully flanged TOTEM “DEPTFORD”. VGC with minor edge repairs only.

 

25        GER enamel station sign “BOOKING OFFICE”, white on blue, 24”x12” and originally framed. Good colour and shine but a couple of large chips not affecting the text.

 

26*      WORKSPLATE LNER 9”x5”  “1290/1947” from a BI Class 4-6-0 built by North British Loco Co and numbered 61290 by BR. It was shedded at Darlington, Stockton and for many years at Carlisle Canal from where it was withdrawn 3/62. Front repainted.

 

27        Signalbox diagram “STOKE”, an East Coast Main Line box south of Grantham. Dated 1954. 42”x17”. Rolled.

 

28*      GER Tyers signalling plunger with brass fittings and large glass knob 5½”x9½”. GC.

 

29*      CARRIAGE PRINT “The Cinque Port of Dover, Kent” by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region series (A). This rare Southern print is the first from the set of 5 that are all available in this auction. They are mounted on card and are in original type frames. The prints were a leaving presentation for a member of staff and are all 23” x 11”. (See lots 117, 215, 312, 375)

 

30        Queensland Government Railways BOILER NUMBERPLATE “No. 559” from a 3’6” gauge Class PB15 4-6-0 built by Walkers in 1910, Works No. 156, to an 1899 lightweight passenger design, with 202 in the Class. Most were withdrawn in the 1960s. Rectangular brass, 18”x7”, with scalloped corners and slightly convex to fit the boiler. Front repainted.

 

31*        GWR cast iron CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “9612” from a 5700 Class 0-6-0PT which was new to Westbury in 8/45 and spent the whole of its life there until withdrawal in 12/63. Ex loco condition with red background.

 

32          BR(E) enamel doorplate “WAITING ROOM”. 18”x6”. Edge chips only but some discolouration.

 

33        Chad Valley for GWR wooden jigsaw puzzle “WINDSOR CASTLE (KNIGHTS)”, complete and original with GC box.

 

34*      “West Riding and Grimsby Railway” fully titled cast iron trespass notice (GNR pattern). 28”x16”. Front repainted.

 

35        Enamel advertising sign “Paramount The Fireproof Wallboard”, black on orange, 48”x24”. GC with edge chips only

 

36*      LNER stoneware storage jar incised “L.N.E.R. RC” [=Restaurant Cars] on the side. 8” tall. Excellent condition.

 

37        SHEDPLATE  “31B”  (March 1950-73). Repainted.

 

38        BR(Sc) flanged enamel station sign “LADIES ROOM”. 24”x18”. Good unrestored condition apart from one face chip and the usual edge chips.

 

39*      BR(W) fully flanged TOTEM “HOCKLEY”. VG colour and shine with three small and well executed chip repairs and slight flange damage.

 

40*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Deeping St James, Lincolnshire” by Freda Marston from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

41        GCR pegging block instrument, stamped “G.C.Ry”, in sound ex signal box condition.

 

42        Collection of  black and white photographs of diesel locomotives, ranging from Warships to the APT, in various locations. Must be viewed.  (100)

 

43        Cast aluminum sign “BEWARE OF CATTLE”, 20”x16”, in good ex side of field condition apart from a slight crack.

 

44        Wooden signal arm, believed to be GER, complete with cast iron spectacle plate (but no glasses) and rear vision plate. 61” long, in good ex lineside condition. Must be removed on the day.

 

45*        BR(Sc) fully flanged TOTEM “LEVEN”. Good colour and shine with repairs to 2 tiny face chips. Only the 2nd time in auction.

 

46          Station plan “GNR HIGHGATE STATION” (1903). 28”x21”. Rolled.

 

47*        WORKSPLATE “No 1047 Gorton 1952” from BR Class EM1, later Class 76, No 26040/76040 which entered traffic at Wath in April 1952 and was withdrawn from Reddish in July 1981. Oval brass, 12½”x6”. Front polished.

 

48*      Brass signalbox plunger on wooden box with ivorine plate “Push to Release 41 Normal & Over”. Ex box condition.

 

49*      BR(NE) unflanged enamel doorplate “PRIVATE”, 18”x3½”. Excellent condition.

 

50        Single line key token “BRAITHWAITE/ BASSENTHWAITE LAKE 21”, a section of the Lake District line from Penrith to Cockermouth. Plated steel.

 

51        SHEDPLATE “40B” (Immingham 1950-73, closed to steam 1966). Repainted.

 

52*      NER coat-of-arms transfer mounted on a maroon board, 15”x15”.

 

53        CARRIAGE PRINTS “Sandsend” by Jack Merriott, “Maldon” by Henry Denham and  “River Allen” by Leonard Squirrell, all from the LNER series and unframed. (3)

 

54*      GWR small brass locomotive whistle. Polished.

 

55*      BR(S) half flanged TOTEM “GORING-BY-SEA”, a station on the Brighton to Portsmouth line. VGC with just a couple of tiny marks touched in.

 

56        “GN & GE Joint Railway” [so titled] cast iron trespass notice. 28”x16”. Ex lineside condition.

 

57          HST “swallow” motif, left facing, in stainless steel. VG ex loco condition.

 

58*      Advertising enamel “Evans Antiseptic Throat Pastilles”, semi-pictorial showing a hand holding a packet of the pastilles. Mainly red and black on yellow. 24”x11”. One large face chip but quite good otherwise.

 

59*      LNER carriage board “MORPETH/ROTHBURY”, double sided 32½”x3½”, relating to an ex NBR branch In Northumberland, closed in 1952. Good well used condition.

 

60*      LNER ½ pint silver plated tankard, the side marked “LNER” in script letters. GC.

 

61        Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway fully titled cast iron trespass notice in ex lineside condition. 31”x21”.

 

62*      “Union-Castle Line” [so marked on the side in garter device] toast rack, silver plated with ornate handle. VGC.

 

63*        SHEDPLATE “36C” (Frodingham 1950-73, closed to steam 1966). Front repainted.

 

64*        SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE “48753” from an ex LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 built at Doncaster in 1945, Works No 1554, as LNER Class O6. It was initially allocated LMS No 8490 but this number was never used and it was actually numbered 8753. It was shedded at Widnes, Mold Junction, Nuneaton and Buxton from where it was withdrawn 3/67. Front repainted over original paint.

 

65*      CARRIAGE PRINT “Grimsby, Lincolnshire” by E.T.Holding from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

66*      WAGONPLATE “R.Y. Pickering & Co Ltd Builders Wishaw near Glasgow”.. Diamond shape 11”x7” with rounded corners. Repainted and mounted on a backboard.

 

67*      SR departure board enamels “Bellingham”, “Birkbeck”, “Brockley”, “Malling” and “Meopham”, all 17”x2¼” white on blue, most GC with edge chips only. (5)

 

68        Track diagram “GNR Main Line including DIGSWELL & LORD COWPERS SIDINGS”. 133”x29”. Rolled.

 

69        Traction engine brass whistle 17” tall, complete with operating lever and brass base so that it stands up. Polished.

 

70*        BR(E) enamel station sign regarding ticket conditions. 6”x4”. VGC apart from repairs around two screw holes.

 

71*        GCR non pegging block Instrument, stamped “G.C.Ry”, in sound ex signal box condition.

 

72        Signalbox diagram “GRANTHAM NORTH” (1967). 83”x28”. Rolled.

 

73        Cast iron plate “LMS Maintenance Ends”. Oval 6”x4”. Front repainted.

 

74        BR(Sc) fully flanged TOTEM “MAWCARSE”, a station in north-west Fife on the closed route to Perth. Three well executed face repairs but GC otherwise.

 

75        CARRIAGE PRINT  “London, Horse Guards, Whitehall” by John Baker from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

76          LT underground enamel sign “For Main Line Station”. Blue on white, 37”x12”. Fair condition with a number of mainly small chips.

 

77          Set of Polish State Railways [PKP] locomotive plates from a standard gauge 2-10-0 built c1944 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn for general freight duties in continental Europe and acquired by Poland as “war booty”, all being out of use in Poland by 1992: (1) Numberplate “842”, brass 13”x6½”; (2) Class plate “TY2”, cast iron 11”x6” and (3) “P.K.P.” Eagle emblem, cast iron 7½”x10”. The number and class plates are in ex loco condition, the eagle emblem is reputedly a copy produced by the PKP. (3)

 

78*        Signal box nameboard “FULWOOD JUNCT”. Painted wood, black on white, 73”x10”. Generally in good unrestored condition but the right hand end beading is missing.

 

79*      LSWR cast iron doorplate “PRIVATE”, 11½”x4”. Generally in good ex door condition but two small additional fixing holes have been face drilled.

 

80*      WORKSPLATE “Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd 7046 Newcastle Works 1941” from an 0-4-0ST at Pilkington Bros, Glass Manufacturers, St Helens, their No 5, named “ROF 9”. Brass oval 13” x 8½” in totally ex loco condition.

 

81*      GNR bullseye signal lamp case brass plated “Great Northern Railway No 11272” and with a brass location plate “LEGBOURNE ROAD”. Good unrestored condition.

 

82        LT Underground enamel cab destination board “LIVERPOOL ST/ DENHAM”. This example has brass ends with two extra holes in the top. GC apart from chipping around the holes.

 

83        SHEDPLATE “40A” (Lincoln 1950-73) in ex loco condition.

 

84*      BR(Sc) flanged enamel station sign “TICKET OFFICE” from Arrochar & Tarbet station on the West Highland line. 24”x18”. GC with only minor chipping.

 

85*        GWR wooden split-case block bell with large cowbell shaped bell. Good ex signal box condition.

 

86*        BR(M) fully flanged TOTEM  “SHENSTONE”, an ex LNWR station on the Birmingham-Lichfield line. GC overall with just a couple of tiny face repairs but slight loss of shine.

 

87          Tickets, LNER, from and to Lincolnshire stations including Grantham to Burgh le Marsh, Snelland, Tunby Woodside, Louth, Appleby, Wainfleet, New Bollingbroke, Leadenham etc.  (50)

 

88          Colour patterns ex Stratford Works for BR green and black lined locomotive liveries, painted on alloy sheets 12”x6”. GC. (3)

 

89*        WORKSPLATE “LMS Rebuilt 1920 Derby”. Alloy oval 10”x6” with “Pattern No 5” cast in the back. Repainted. Probably a replacement plate from an ex MR Class 3F 0-6-0 which were rebuilt by Fowler from 1920.

 

90*      NAMEPLATE “SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS” from a BR Class 47 which was built  at Crewe and entered traffic as D1605 in 7/64 at Landore. It was renumbered 47559 and named at Laira Open Day in 4/82 after the English portrait painter (1723-92) with strong south-west England connections, who became the first President of the Royal Academy in 1768. The nameplates were removed in 1/92. The cast aluminum plate 72”x10” is in totally ex loco condition and comes with its Collectors Corner receipt.

 

91*      Large leather cash bag, brass plated “SAWBRIDGEWORTH & HARLOW TOWN”. Good well used condition.

 

92*      Single line key token “BRORA/HELMSDALE 6” in plated steel. A section of the ex HR “Far North” line.

 

93*      ”Midland & Gt Northern Joint Railway” [so titled] cast iron trespass notice (MR pattern). 31”X14½”. Front restored.

 

94*      WAGONPLATE “Stephenson Clarke & Associated Cos Ltd London”. Oval cast iron 8”x5”, repainted and mounted on a small display board.

 

95 *       BR(E) enamel station sign “Entrance to Station over Footbridge”. 24”x18”. GC overall with mainly edge chips.

 

96*        LNER cast iron seatback “GORDON HILL” from a station on the Kings Cross to Hertford North line which did not have totems. 36”x4¼”. Front repainted.

 

97          SHEDPLATE “40E” (Langwith Junction 1950-58, Colwick 1958-66). Repainted.

 

98          GWR carded notice “Accidents to Company’s Servants” signed “Frank Potter General Manager” and dated 1913. 13”x16½”. Some water staining at the bottom but GC for its age.

 

99*        CARRIAGE PRINT “Great Yarmouth, Norfolk” by ET Holding from the LNER series. Unframed.

 

100       GER station platform bench. The two cast iron ends are unmarked but the woodwork is branded “GER”. Complete but presented in “kit” form for ease of transportation.

 

101*      BR(E) flangeless enamel doorplate “LADIES ROOM”, 18”x3½” with good colour and shine and just the usual edge chipping.

 

102     LNER carriage compartment carpet, floral and leaf pattern with “LNER” in script letters at both ends. 67”x29”. In good well used condition with one repair and some fraying at the ends.

 

103       GCR pattern wooden split-cased block bell with cowbell style bell, off-centre tapper and a traffolite plate “Middle Road Bell” (damaged). Sound ex signal box condition.

 

104*      BR(E) fully flanged TOTEM “KINGS LYNN” in superb condition with only minor edge repairs. A scarce example as totems from this ex GER north Norfolk terminus have only appeared twice before in auction.

 

105*    CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “5” from the first of 10 Ivatt designed 5’ 3” gauge WT Class 2-6-4T built 7/46 by the LMS at Derby for the Northern Counties Committee of Ireland and withdrawn 4/70. Rectangular brass, 17”x9½”, the front repainted

 

106     “G.N.&G.E. Joint Railway”  [so titled] cast iron notice “Beware of the Trains Look Both Up and Down the Line before you Cross”. 22”x12½”. Ex lineside condition.

 

107*    Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway fully titled coat-of-arms transfer mounted on a green board, 24”x21” overall. VGC.

 

108*    LMS clothes brush with large and small brushes, marked “”LMSR” in pinhead letters on the top. Good used condition.

 

109     SHEDPLATE “41C” (Sheffield Millhouses 1958-61, Wath from 1963). Repainted.

 

110*      WORKSPLATE “Built 1957 Doncaster”. Locos built that year were BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 73165-71, Standard Class 4 2-6-0 76100-14 and Class 08 Diesel Shunters D3497-9. Oval cast iron 10½”x6”. Front repainted.

 

111*    BR(E) 10” dial, wire fusee movement, oak cased roundhead clock. The face and the back of the dial are both marked “B.R.(E) 15088”. VGC, complete with pendulum and key.

 

112     GWR/BR(W) 1947 pattern wooden cased, single dial block instrument in sound ex signal box condition.

 

113       SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE  “90083” from a 2-8-0 Austerity built 9/44 to Ministry of Supply order by the North British Locomotive Co Ltd, Works No 24950, entering traffic as War Department No 78513. It was purchased by the LNER 12/45 and numbered 3083. On entering BR service it was first numbered 63083 and later 90083. It was shedded at March, Immingham and then back to March from where it was withdrawn 12/59. Front repainted.

 

114     Alloy diesel depot plaque depicting a star and scroll, the logo for Immingham Depot. Front repainted, ex loco back.

 

115*    LT Underground flanged enamel sign “Bakerloo Line  Platform 4 Northbound Baker Street Paddington Wembley Park Stanmore” with pointing arrow, probably from Oxford Circus. Brown and black on white, 18”x18”. VGC with only minor edge chips.

 

116     GER station plan “BUNTINGFORD” (1907), a Hertfordshire branch terminus which closed in 1964. 32”x22”. Rolled.

 

117*      CARRIAGE PRINT “The Cinque Port of Sandwich, Kent” by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region series(A). No 2 in the set of 5 offered today.

 

118       Bridgeplate “LMS 341” from a bridge near Georgemas Junction, Britain’s most northerly junction, on the ex HR “Far North” line. Oval cast iron 17½”x11”. Front repainted.

 

119       GCR 3-aspect handlamp stamped “GCR” and “10157”  and with a later brass plate “London & North Eastern Railway Chesterfield”. Complete with vessel, burner and red and green glasses.

 

120*      BR(M) reduced flanged TOTEM  “MANTON” with a reduced flange all round and 4 integral face holes for wall mounting. Excellent condition apart from a small repair around one of the screwholes.

 

121*    Single line tablet  “LONG SUTTON/GEDNEY 10”, a section of the ex M&GN line closed in 1959. Alloy.

 

122*    BR(E) flanged enamel sign “GOODS OFFICE”. 24”x18”. GC overall with only minor chipping.

 

123*    CARRIAGE PRINT “Lincolnshire Wolds, near Horncastle” by Freda Marston from the LNER series. Framed and glazed.

 

124       SHEDPLATE “18A” (Toton 1950-63). Front repainted.

 

125*      NBR cast iron Stevens signal finial, 29” tall, with all four feet intact. Repainted.

 

126*      LNER Marine Department enamel lapel badge “LNER Life Boat 4C”. Circular 1½” diameter, blue and white on silver. VGC complete with pin fitting.

 

127*      MR/LMS signal box nameboard “ROYSTON JUNCTION”, wood with metal letters, from the box which controlled the junction of the lines from Leeds and Dewsbury. 86”x10½”. Repainted.

 

128       Great Central Railway crane numberplate “GCR J1732”. Brass oval 4¼”x2½”. Unrestored.

 

129*      BR(Sc) flanged enamel station sign “LADIES WAITING ROOM”. Good colour and shine with a couple of face chips and enamel loss around the edges. 24” x 18”.

 

130       MR cast iron signal finial, the smaller pattern 22” tall. Repainted.

 

131        LNER track diagram “HIGHDYKE-STAINBY-SPROXTON”, a diagram of the single track Highdyke mineral line and sidings serving ironstone quarries south west of Grantham. 56”x15”. Rolled.

 

132*     CARRIAGE PRINT “Direct Electric Services, London-Brighton” by Richard Ward from the Southern Region series(B). This is the 2nd of the set of 4 offered today.

 

133*       BR(S) fully flanged TOTEM “PADDOCK WOOD”, a Kent station on the Guildford-Ashford line. GC apart from a repair in the lower panel.

 

134*      Advertising enamel “Albion Cakes & Meals”. Black on yellow. 48”x24”. Some chips but not bad overall.

 

135*      Single line key token “BANAVIE/ANNAT 12”, a section of the West Highland Line extension to Mallaig. Brass.

 

136       SHEDPLATE “41D” (Canklow 1958-65). Repainted.

 

137       LT Underground “Colour Key” enamel showing the colour applicable to each line when advising a change of  trains. 16”x10”. VGC with only minor edge chipping.

 

138*      WORKSPLATE “North British Locomotive Company Ltd Glasgow No 26957 1952” from a Sudan Government Railways 3’6” gauge Class 310 2-8-2, running no. 323, which generally operated into the 1970s. Brass diamond, 13½”x5½”, in ex loco condition.

 

139       GWR fully titled printed “Notice to Passengers – Life-Saving Appliances. Emergency Signal” as displayed on the Company’s Ships. 9”x7”. Plastic coated and mounted on a board.

 

140       CARRIAGE PRINT “MV Swan, BR Lake Windermere Service” by Claude Buckle from the LMR Series(D). Framed and glazed.

 

141       WORKSPLATE LMS built 1925 Derby. Locos built that year were Class 4P Compound 4-4-0 (4)1085-113 and Class 4F 0-6-0 (4)4035-56/207-16. Brass oval 10¼”x6”. The front is generally in ex loco condition, the back has been cleaned.

 

142       MR early engraved brass signal lever plate “BEESTON NORTH JUNCTION”, relating to a junction west of Nottingham. 4¾”x¾”. Lightly polished.

 

143       LNER signal box diagram “BARROWBY ROAD” (1943), an East Coast Main Line box just north of Grantham at the junction with the Nottingham line. 36”x17”. Rolled.

 

144       NER cast iron bridgeplate “76”. Oval 11”x7”. Unrestored.

 

145       BR(M) fully flexible TOTEM “BURNLEY BARRACKS”. This totem has had significant restoration from poor condition and must be viewed before bidding.

 

146*      SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE “42316” from a LMS Fowler Class 4P 2-6-4T built at Derby in 1928. Its BR sheds were Willesden, Crewe North, Neasden and finally Stockport from where it was withdrawn 2/63 to be scrapped at Derby Works 8/63. Totally ex loco condition.

 

147     CARRIAGE PRINT “Edale, Derbyshire” by Jack Merriott from the LMR Series (A). Framed and glazed.

 

148*      SHEDPLATE “41A” (Sheffield Darnall 1955-64, Tinsley 1964-73), unusually with countersunk holes. Repainted.

 

149       BR(E) enamel doorplate “WAITING ROOM”. 18”x6”. Excellent condition.

 

150*      POSTER D/R “Colwyn Bay” by Angrave issued jointly by BR(M) and the Borough of Colwyn Bay. A view of the pier, promenade and beach.
