LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE “LIGHTNING” from Britannia Class 70019.
Built at Crewe in 1951 as one of a batch of 15 locos named after
earlier famous GWR broad gauge locomotives, 70019 went new to
Newton Abbot in July 1951 and was the first Britannia to
work into Cornwall on 28th Aug 1951 on the Cornish Riviera
Express. It was then a Laira engine for a while until all the
Western Britannias went to Cardiff Canton in 1956. Lightning was
transferred to Carlisle Kingmoor in September 1961 and before
withdrawal in March 1966 it was also allocated to Crewe North
and Carlisle Upperby.
After some months in storage at Kingmoor it was cut up at West
of Scotland Shipbreaking Co Troon during the summer of the
following year. A very attractive plate face restored only and
certainly one of the best names – 35” x 6”. TBC |
